Utility

Gain, polarity per channel, width, bass mono, balance and a DC filter, applied in this order: DC filter, gain, polarity, width, bass mono, balance. The meters read this device's own input and output, so one placed late in a chain measures what the devices before it left.

The Utility's expanded view: input and output meters, a gain dial at 0 dB, width and balance dials, a vectorscope and the DC, polarity and mono keys.

Controls and display

Surface (the trim dial): the GAIN knob sits in a bezel at the centre of the face, on its own ±24 dB scale with a long tick every 4 dB and twelve o'clock as untouched, and the device's output level rings that bezel in real time — −48 to +6 dB with a held tick at the recent peak, amber past −6 dB and red past −3 — so the knob you touch most reads its own result. The left card carries this Utility's own IN and OUT ladders (its input, not the track's, so a Utility placed late reads what the devices before it left), the four channel keys DC · Ø L · Ø R · MONO beside them, and an IN → OUT cell reading the peak the device added or removed.

The right card is the stereo half: WIDTH and BALANCE as dials, a vectorscope of the output between them (a vertical line is mono, a round cloud is wide, a horizontal smear is out of phase), the correlation bar with a MONO SAFE / PHASE lamp, and the BASS MONO key with its crossover knob along the foot. Double-click the box to open it full width; the dock box shows the same objects with the scope between the two dials.
