The Transport and the Top Bar
The top of the window is one continuous 38-px console band — a slim LCD strip rather than a bevelled panel.
Left cluster: the ZAMMOTH wordmark with the version/beta tag, a project picker (switch between open projects), and an edit picker (switch between edits — alternative arrangements — inside the current project).
Centre — the transport console. The button cluster sits on the window's midline, with LCD readout cells hanging off its left (as the window narrows, cells drop off right-to-left: SIG first, then KEY, BPM, BAR·BEAT, TIME). The two read-only cells are printed in the dimmer readout ink; the three you can edit are bright, so the row says which is which before you touch it:
| Cell | Shows | Gestures |
|---|---|---|
| TIME | playhead position, m:ss.mmm | read-only |
| BAR·BEAT | bars.beats.sixteenths, honouring any "Set 1.1.1 here" grid origin | read-only |
| BPM | tempo, one decimal | drag vertically to nudge (⇧ = fine), scroll ±1 per notch (⇧ = ±0.1) — both live-preview the tempo while you gesture; double-click to type a value. Range 20–300 BPM. |
| KEY | the detected song key ("A min"), or — | click for a 24-key picker (12 major + 12 minor). Before a key is detected it sets the project key; once a key is known, picking one transposes the whole song to it (a confirmed agent action; the pitch shift keeps the song's mode, remapping to the nearest relative key when needed). |
| SIG | time signature | click for eight common signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 12/8) |
The transport buttons, all lit phosphor glyphs (record stays red):
- RTZ (◀|) — return to start.
- Play/Pause (▶/❚❚) — see the Space-bar rules below.
- Stop (■) — stop and rewind to the start.
- Record (●) — start/stop recording (F9).
- Loop (↻) — toggle looping. With no loop brace drawn, it loops the whole song. The loop is user-only — the agent cannot touch it.
- Punch (⊐⊏) — punch in/out: recording only engages inside the loop range.
- Metronome — click toggles the click; right-click opens its menu (Count-In, Sound, Rhythm, Enable Only While Recording). Once the click has ever ticked, the glyph becomes the segment counter: one dot per beat in the bar, the current beat's dot lit and numbered, sweeping left to right and pulsing exactly on the beat ("beat 3 of 4" in one glance). Filled dots = click on; hollow outline = off.
- AUTO lamp — lights jade when any automation lane is manually overridden; click it to re-enable all automation.
Right cluster — the meter well, right to left:
- CLIP lamp — two-stage: red (held ~1.5 s) when the master's live true peak crosses 0 dBTP (real inter-sample clipping); amber when it crosses the deliverable ceiling (your master limiter's ceiling, or the −1 dBTP guardrail) without actually clipping — "hot, not clipping". It is also the master safety limiter's switch: a jade ring around the lamp and the caption LIMIT mean a limiter is guarding the master; click the lamp (or press ⌥⌘L) to remove it or put the safety one back. The click clears the latch too. The safety limiter is a ceiling-only −1 dBTP limiter with no loudness makeup — transparent until a peak actually reaches the ceiling — and every new project starts with one (Preferences ▸ Files & Updates ▸ New projects turns that off). Removing it removes every limiter on the master, a hand-placed loudness limiter included.
- CPU meter — a 12-segment LED ladder (green/amber/red zones) with a white peak-hold tick that decays over ~10 s; the numeric % sits under the ladder's right end, opposite the CPU label. Click the cell to show/hide the % text.
- MIDI IN/OUT dots — IN blinks on incoming hardware MIDI; OUT lights while MIDI clock/MTC is being sent.
- ENGINEER cell — the agent's presence: a faint watermark when idle; while a run is active it breathes amber and names the current pass. Click it to open/close the Engineer panel.
Playback rules
- Space — play. Pressing Space while playing stops and snaps back to where playback started (the audition behaviour).
- ⇧Space — continue: resume from (or stop at) the actual stop point, no snap-back.
- Stop /
transport.stop— always stops and rewinds to 0 (whether you or the agent triggers it). - Clicking a ruler (or near the playhead line) scrubs; ← / → nudge the playhead by a grid step, ⇧← / ⇧→ by a bar; Home / End jump to the ends.
- If the Loop Deck currently owns playback, any arrangement transport action (Space, Stop, RTZ, a timeline click) first stops the launched clips and hands playback back to the arrangement.
Interface zoom
Separate from timeline zoom: ⌘= / ⌘− scale the whole interface up/down and ⌘⌥0 returns to actual size (the View menu shows the current %).
